Extraction Date

We finally have a set extraction date. This is the day we leave Japan and fly onward to our next adventure. Getting to this point has been unexpectedly stressful and filled with uncertainty. I cried when we got confirmation for our flights. I literally cried. Tears. From my face! That has never happened before.

When The Love Of Your Life Gets Old

My sweet bulldog C├ęsar is getting old and his little body isn’t as healthy as it used to be. We spent the summer taking him to see the vet for what we thought was arthritis pain. He would wake up in pain, legs weak and wobbly, and so we would rush him in for relief. After a few visits and lots of pain meds, he woke up crying one morning with a distended belly.

Hello, Courage!

I recently discovered PyLadies Remote. PyLadies is “an international mentorship group with a focus on helping more women become active participants and leaders in the Python open-source community.” They have a “remote” or online group for women who don’t live near an established group… that’s me!

Hello, Sasebo!

A few months ago, I started working on a Rails Girls App tutorial... again. This time, the tutorial was modified by the Rails Girls team in LA to create a bucket list that I thought would be really useful to my American community in southern Japan. I called it “Japan Adventure App” but eventually changed it to “Hello, Sasebo!

Hello, Atsugi!

Hello, Atsugi!

Japan is a beautiful country with an impressive highway system peppered with robust rest areas that make car travel easy and comfortable. What they do not have is a chain of hotels friendly to four-legged family members. This has been a difficult adjustment for our family. Our boys love road trips. George loves watching the world go by from the back seat window and Cesar loves hotel beds and room service. We’ve missed that in Japan.

Ahoy, USS Giffords!

Ahoy, USS Giffords!

Earlier this week, the Navy commissioned USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10) and much ado was made over the fact that she was named after a living person. I could point out that Carl Vinson, also a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, was still living when he had an aircraft carrier named after him but I suspect, based on tweets and comments left on news articles, that it wouldn’t matter.

Hello, Nagasaki!

Hello, Nagasaki!

When we found out we were moving to Kyushu, I promptly added the Nagasaki Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum to my bucket list. I am ashamed to say it took two years for us to make the short drive down to Nagasaki to experience this part of our shared history. Shame aside, it was every bit as moving as I expected it to be.

Custom Domains With Heroku

I dreamed I asked someone to get me a fingernail. Just one. With clear nail polish. That’s weird, right? I mean, I almost never wear nail polish… and, you know, I have all my fingernails sooo an extra one would be just so unnecessarily excessive. So strange. Anyway, this wasn’t supposed to be about fingernails. I wanted to write about custom domains.

What’s Next?

Do you use the Day One App? I do… sometimes… when I remember. A couple of weeks ago, Day One reminded me of an entry I made two years ago to mark our safe arrival in Japan. We spent a month traveling from Washington D.C. (to Biloxi, to White Sands, to San Diego, to Joshua Tree, to the Grand Canyon, to Moab, to San Francisco, to the Redwoods) to Seattle for our flight. The boys loved sleeping on hotel beds and spending 24/7 with their two favorite people. George loved being in the car, watching the world go by, as we traveled from one destination to the next. We had a great time but I was so relieved to be in Japan and ready to settle down.
